Growing Up in Filthy Places: An Emphasis

Fiction:

It is not that I wanted to grow up that way. I wanted the good life. I wanted it all: love, fame and fortune. But instead I got filth!

I remember how he used to tell me that I was the only special thing in his life. Daddy would come back home late at night, and I'd still be up waiting for his kiss on my cheeks. Oh, how I used to long for that kiss. I'd stay awake chasing the flies from my dirty face. I'd stay awake hugging Lucy, the doll who never came to life- with her one eye and half-torn neck. I'd stay awake crying because mama was in her room downing the rum like her life depended on it. Finally, papa would stroll into my room and give me my long-awaited kiss, even with the filth on his mouth from the bituminous coal mine. Yes, daddy worked those unnecessary long hours inside that filthy black hole. They were not worth it because the money was useless. In fact he smelled of rotten eggs every night. He told me it was the damp sulfur in the air which they called 'stink damp.' My older sister ran away from it all, but I was the one who stayed and endured the stench.

Daddy was a brave man. Mama was a weak alcoholic. My sister was a run-away child. Why I stayed here in the stench, I do not understand. But I am growing up in filth.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * *

In Matthew 13 Jesus talked about the parable of the wheat and the weeds. See, a farmer sowed good seeds and in the night his enemy came to plant weeds amongst the good seeds. After a while, his servants began to notice the weeds and complain. But the master told them to allow the good seeds to grow in the filth. "If you remove them now," he said, "the good ones will be taken away with the bad." So he instructed them to wait till the harvest time when all the plants were mature. At that time, the right time, one would be able to tell which ones are good and which ones aren't. Then, the servants would be authorized to bring only the good wheat into the barn and burn up all the weeds.

So you may have been wondering why you're still living in the filth of yesterday. It's because there's something precious about growing up in filth, as stupid as it may sound. If the filth is taken away from you too early, it may take away something good from you. But you're still there, in the filth, for a reason. You have to learn how to be mature, even in the rubbish. You have to learn the golden rules of life. But just endure...endure till you get there. What you want will eventually come to you... No kidding!

"If you remove them now," he said, "the good ones will be taken away with the bad."

This is a repost from April 27th 2009, only slightly revised. I still feel like there is filth in the places where I am today. Soon the harvest will come and the filth will be taken away from me. My plight is to endure until my testimony comes, a testimony that will light up the world.

Do you ever feel like you're maturing in a filthy place? If you do, then this post is for you. Over to you.

@2Cute4u...yes, yes...by God's grace...that is the purpose of this blog. To shed God's light in places that were once dark. I already have the "We are Jos" contribution-method info on my sidebar, but if you want me to put the main banner instead in that slot...no probs!

Jay, this is lovely.
"So he instructed them TO WAIT till the harvest time when all the plants were mature."

That is something about our God. He is very (I repeat, very patient) with us. He waits! He waits for us till we are mature. He knows the filth isn't the real us. He knows if He waits, just a little more... we'd be mature and separable from the filth that's corrupted our real image.

Yes, He waits...

amen to that. this is exactly how i feel and this post just reminded me again that we have a mercifl and loving Father

@LDP...tell me about His patience. Even when one silly sheep left the fold, He being the Shepherd left the remaining 99 sheep to go and look for the 100th one. 99 is already a great # of sheep to have. An impatient Shepherd would have moved on with the grazing...(God's patience is an interesting perspective of this post, thanks again for adding your valuable light).

@Uzezi, you feel that way too? Can't wait for your own "harvest" testimony as well, like myself. The day of reckoning.

@2cute4me...no probs! :) :) :)

This post reminds me of a song that goes

"We all need a little dirt to grow"

The message is striking and I think we all have that filth that we need to outgrow. But all in His time!

@Immanuel, first...your blog is really cool. Second, I like that you said "All in His time..." Ecclesiastes 3. There's nothing like waiting for the right time.

This totally speaks to anyone's situation because everybody is going through some kind of filth- even those who may hide it well. Very inspiring... :)

yeah, its hard to see and accept but the truth is that sometimes the filth , the mess and the weed all work together for our good. thanks for sharing this jaycee.

@Shona...Amen. Thank you so much for that encouragement, I receive that.

@F...and people are really good at hiding the filth. The girl in the story, for instance, used her father's kiss to cover all the filth. Most times we use our "smiles" to cover up the pain. I pray this speaks to as many as read that dirt is not meant to last forever. Thanks.

@Femme Lounge...yes, they all work together for our good. Sometimes we just fail to recognize it. Thanks so much...hope your weekend has been fantastic so far :)

....this is how I feel at this point in my life. *sigh* BUT I thank God that He works it all together for my good - filth and all.. which will be removed when the time is right.

... in the meantime, I must strive to learn the lessons I am to, even from the filth...

Have a great weeekend luv x

@Remi...hey R, I guess we're all a group of people @ some crazy phases in life. As far as we know what the first Psalm says, that those who meditate on His word will be like a tree planted by living waters...heyyyyyyy...we already know the end, even when we're at the middle stage. Have a lovely & blessed weekend dearie...oh one more thing, "eyes have not seen, nor ears heard, the things which God plans to do for you Remi...don't forget that scripture. *big grin*

"there's something precious about growing up in filth"

This is a strange statement, Jaycee, but it fits right into your post! I got to hand it to you - you must be right. Scripture doesn't lie. :) I'm not sure I would have ever said it this way - but it's a powerful statement.

It makes me think of the 'filth' that I grew up in - people didn't see it - it was hidden well - we were the pastor's family, ya know. We had to keep it hidden.

But GOD...

As you said...dirt isn't meant to last forever. Thank God for that! Seriously, I am who I am today because of the filth I grew up with. CHOICE has made the difference in my life. I chose LIFE instead of death and LIES. That's why I'm BIG on TRUTH and JUSTICE - I grew up with the filth of LIES. I chose a differnt path.

TRUTH...God was with me then as He is with me now. He's the same today as He was then...He never left me alone or abandoned.

We all have filth taking up residence in close proximity to ours. It amazes me how we seem to recognize it in someone else's life - without seeing in in our own. When I'm focused on Jesus - I can't help but see my hidden filth - He shines the light into those dark places quicker than I can close my eyes against it!

He is my salvation - my HOPE - My filth eraser. I couldn't 'grow' a day without Him.

Great pondering post, as usual. thanks for sharing

Jennifer A. said...

@Patrina, you're right...scripture doesn't lie. I consider any unwanted particles on my living room floor as filth, so were the weeds that grew along with the plants. Nice word verification...lol. Keep being His watchman...:)

"And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness—
secret riches.
I will do this so you may know that I am the Lord,

This scripture that was on Rita's devotional blog seems to fit here with your post!

@LovePaprika...u're welkie! Glad you came to read :)

@Jinta...yes o...it has no choice.

@Patrina..."treasures hidden in darkness," yes it definitely fits because filth covers our treasure, just like darkness does. Thank you so much for sharing that Patrina.
