What did you think when you saw that title? Did your mind travel briefly to Northwest Airlines Flight 253? Did you remember December 25th 2009, the fateful day young Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab tried to detonate plastic explosives on Flight 253? Or did you think about Father H's story, the German Catholic Pedophile Priest? Oh, what about Andrea Yates who drowned all her kids in the bathtub because she thought her children weren't righteous enough and were going to hell?
Well, ever since I listened in on the Verastic radio show this past Saturday and heard one of the callers saying that the recent Jos killings was as a result of people "disguising politics in the name of religion," I've been musing on his statement. People do disguise a lot of things under God's name.
Through the pages of history, men and women have disguised scandals under the name of God. In Umar's case, I found out that when he was 18 he fantasized about women & sex, and since he knew he was not ready to get married without his degree and career, he turned his focus instead to religious fantasies (Jihad fantasies)--my resource is Here.
The Bold Claim:
#We humans are prone to saying, "God sent me to do it" because rather than accept responsibilities for our actions, we believe we have someone in a supernatural place to point fingers to. He told me to do it, it was not my idea.
5 Musings on Criminals and Whether God Sent Them:
1) God's Errands are not Murder:
The God I know does not send people on errands to kill for Him or to commit atrocious acts. Instead, He sent His son to be the last sacrifice. (John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He sent His only son that whosoever believes in Jesus will not perish but have everlasting life").
2) Neither God, Nor the Devil:
If you ever think about a criminal act, God did not send you, and neither did the devil! You have dominion over every action you will ever take. Yes, the devil will lay a criminal option on a platter of gold at your feet, but you will choose to say "yes" or "no." (Psalm 8:4 & 6, "What is man that You are mindful of him? You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands").
3) Not What You Think:
The problems in Nigeria (specifically Jos) are not because Muslims think they are better off than Christians (or vice-versa), but more so they are as a result of selfishness and greed in people of authority and in some Nigerians in general. Should a Muslim be in power or should a Christian be in power? These are the questions that have taken away the innocent lives of men, women, and children. It has nothing to do with their gods.
4) Did God Really Tell You?
God still speaks today, but we're often too fast to say "God told me so." God does not go against His own word. If you're Christian and you hear something that goes against what you have read in the bible, then it is not God speaking to you. It is someone else.
5) The Flesh Has Done It Again:
Every criminal act has been as a result of the tendencies of the human flesh, not because God did it or sent the criminal to do it. (Mark 14:38 "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.")
Disclaimer: I understand that there were wars in the bible where the Israelites struck the Philistines (and some others). However, when Jesus came, He said, "It is finished." He was sacrificed for my sins and your sins. No longer do you need to offer blood sacrifices. I do not believe God will send anyone to kill innocent people in our generation for His cause.
Have you ever mused on the "God sent me" statement and the problems it has caused through history?

I totally agree with you... it is crazy the things people do in the name of God... If only they knew better
Preach it sister! Couldn't have said it better. What about the pastors who rip their congregation off in the name of God told me to do it? We need to stop lying on God. simple!
@Harry...yes, if only they knew better. You just reminded me of the "Son of Hamas" interview that aired on CNN a while back. The son of one of the major Islamic leaders said that many of the young men are like him, they don't know the truth.
@Homie...very true, and it is sad...very sad. That's why I know that it is not just the church building or the people inside the building who make up the body of Christ. It's beyond the buildings...
It's sad! And true too. You know, as much as we should not underestimate the devil, we give him way too much credit! TOO MUCH. If it's not God, it's the devil.
:(
Oh Heaven help us!
@Nakedsha...about giving the devil too much credit, I totally agree. It's the needy hand pointing fingers at someone other than ourselves...
Religion does stink. But people's hearts are even more desperately wicked :(
religion is the opium of the masses..it really is.
first off, I really want to thank you for your immense support of the WE ARE JOS project.. We are all so grateful.. we just wish there are really more like you..
To your post,I'm really in support of your theories..Its so pathetic the way people do horrible in the name of a mission from God.. All the best!
@Owumi...for real! I don't know of any better way to repeat that :)
@histreasure...like an addiction that is hard to curb, eh? Just like dangerous addictions out there, thank God there's a way out of this one...there's a way out of 'religiosity.'
Thinking about it, it's hard for some to tell the difference between being religious and just being real with God.
@2cute4u...glad to be a part of it. Thanks for spreading the cause...
This so true.
So many atrocities have been committed in the name of the father.
Just like you said, God cannot go against his word - I always check every God said uttered with the written word, if its not there then it's a no, no.
God will definitely not send man made i his own image to kill another man made in his own image.
Ditto!
I can't remember that scripture very well.. "woe unto him who says when the Lord sayeth not..." or smthn.
NO wonder our world is in shambles. We often profess what God doesn't say in his name. The more we continue, there's be more 'woes'. I pray God will continue to have mercy on us.
Thanks for sharing Jay.

@Debbie...that's the best practice you have right there, so that when someone tells you something you're iffy about, all you need to do is to cross-check. The Bereans did that, so can we.
@LDP...was just trying to find the scripture u were referring to, and I found Ezekiel 13...very scary! About prophets who say God has said something when He really hasn't...Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel that prophesy, and say thou unto them that prophesy out of their own hearts...
...and it continues...*sigh*...thank God that He forgives us...for His continual mercy.
These are the crazy things some people do in the name of God. A few of them are mentally ill of course but others, SMH.
Quite recently, these were my thoughts exactly. I watched a movie where people were using religion (and the "God said to me") to kill.
Simply put, anything that contradicts God is not of God. God is love and He is very consistent.
@Myne...crazy and highly dangerous things, such that we constantly need to pray for protection. SMH
@Rita...I guess another question that rises up from this is, "which god are they talking about? Is it the God we know?" Because if it is, they've got things mixed up. There are so many different gods out there...I choose the One whose name is "Love."
Poor God and religion, getting blamed for the evil men do....
Great post...u couldnt have said it any better.
@Funms...for real! Great and Magnificent, yet He takes the blame each time...
this post is on point!!! we lie against God a lot..and also the devil!
it has been a while I stopped by here..
meanwhile congrats on your wedding :)
This is so true!
People do alot of things in the name of "thus saith the Lord" and take advantage of gullible people.
@Aloted...I know right? Been a while...lol. Thank you, following after your footsteps :)
@Ms. Dufa..."take advantage of gullible people" is the right phrase to use, thanks. I pray that many eyes will be open from now on to see that it's not every one who says "God said" that they should run with. The bible speaks about "testing every spirit," because many will come in His Name.
People do all sort in the name of God. They kill, steal, oppress thinking they are helping God or Saving God!
The key is that they need to be saved.
@NBB...funny enough I read this post again last night before going to bed and I said to myself, "No one can defend God...not even this post can!" Now as for people trying to save God, that is insane...someone recently said this on a post "God's humility amazes me."
As Jesus died He said, "God forgive them for they know not what they do." Whatttttttt? How could He have said that in the midst of such spite? Hu-mi-li-ty.
I did my NYSC in Jos; A peaceful city. Alas! Only BARBARIANS kill children, women & the old! I said this much in facebook that it was religious in nature but some didn't agree. THE BATTLE IS MINE SAYS THE LORD! I strongly believe, GOD would hear the CRY of the innocent blood spilled by ANIMALS in human body!
i don't think i have anything to add
i think of the Crusades,
i think of the Inquisition
and yeah
let's just all we can do is pray
